Dr Joon Kim

Dr Joon Kim is a General Surgeon with sub-specialty training in Surgical Oncology, encompassing Breast Cancer and Skin Cancer surgery.

Dr Kim was raised in Sydney and attended Sydney Grammar School as a Foundation Scholarship recipient before studying medicine at Sydney University. Dr Kim completed his residency at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and did further surgical training at Westmead, Concord and The Canberra Hospital where he trained in Plastic Surgery, Breast Surgery and all aspects of laparoscopic surgery.

After completing his general surgical training Dr Kim was awarded a prestigious Cancer Institute NSW Fellowship. He used this opportunity to pursue further training in Surgical Oncology, specialising in Breast, Soft Tissue and Skin Cancer Surgery.

Dr Kim is extensively published in the area of Breast Cancer and Breast Diseases. His research has been cited by hundreds of other authors. His seminal work on granulomatous mastitis forms the current basis for the management of this complex breast condition.

Since moving to the Southern Highlands Dr Kim has maintained an interest in Breast Cancer Research and has expanded his research interests to Rural Health. He is also involved with the teaching of the next generation of doctors as a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Wollongong.

Dr Kim is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery and one of the founding members of The Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand Society. This organisation is responsible for overseeing the sub-specialty training of Breast Surgeons and monitoring surgical performance and quality of care provided by all Breast Surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Kim is accredited to perform both Endoscopy and Colonoscopy and holds current CCRTGE certification.

Dr Kim offers specialist expertise services in Breast and Skin Cancer Surgery. He also offers all aspects of General Surgery including Laparoscopic Hernia Repairs, Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery and Gastrointestinal Surgery as well as Endoscopy and Colonoscopy.

Dr Kim has been living and providing a service to the Southern Highlands since 2006 and continues to strive to improve surgical services in the area. He is married to Dr Michaella Smith and he is a father of six boys.
